1 Learning about dialogue and using quotations correctly

2 What is dialogue? Dialogue is a conversation (talking) between two or more characters in a piece of writing.

3 Why use it? Dialogue helps a writer explain what happens in their writing Dialogue helps readers visualize (see)c haracters and better understand them

4 How do we show dialogue? We show dialogue by using quotation marks around what the character says. Example: The gingerbread boy yelled, “ Run, run, as fast as you can, you can’t catch me, I’m the gingerbread man! ”

5 Let’s Practice! Who said what? The ________________ said Little pig, little pig let me come in! The _______________replied Not by the hair of my chinny chin chin! Little pig, Little pig, let me come in! Not by the hair of my chinny chin chin!

6 Who said what? _________________ asked May I go to the ball? _________________ replied You, why look at you! You are a mess. You can go only if you can get ready in time. Can I go to the ball? You, why look at you! You are a mess. You can go only if you can get ready in time.

7 Who said what? _________________ said Somebody’s been eating in my porridge. _________________said Somebody’s been eating in my porridge and it’s all gone!
