3 Issues with classification and diagnosis
Including reliability and validity

4 You need to be able to: Identify the issues with classification and diagnosis Discuss these issues (e.g. importance of reliable and valid classification & diagnosis and the consequences of diagnosis You can be asked an essay worth 24 marks on this e.g. Discuss issues related to the classification and/or diagnosis of depression (8 marks +16 marks)

5 Validity and Reliability
In terms of classification and diagnosis: Reliability refers to whether clinicians reach the same diagnosis. Inter-rater and test-retest Validity refers to the extent to which the diagnostic criteria measures what it intends to measure. Concurrent validity Co-morbidity Cultural relativism

6 Case study activity You have to use the classification systems for major depression and decide if the people in the case studies would be diagnosed with major depression. Half of you will use the DSM-V and half will use the ICD-10. Did you all come to the same diagnosis? Concurrent validity refers to the extent of agreement between two measures taken at the same time. Did the class reach a valid diagnosis in the case study activity? Why/Why not?

7 Research assessing concurrent validity
Read the Wittchen et al study on pg3 in the pack and answer the questions (continues onto pg4)

8 Reliability Answer the following questions on the whiteboards:
Name two ways we assess or test for reliability in Psychology? Give brief details on these methods for testing reliability. Extension q: How is reliability different to concurrent validity? Read pg5 and complete the question at the bottom of pg5 & the top of pg6
