2 Leading up to the election of 1828
Republicans from the Era of Good Feelings split into two camps National Republicans - John Quincy Adams Democratic-Republicans - Andrew Jackson

3 Andrew Jackson John Quincy Adams

4 “Old Hickory” Jacksonites - planter hickory poles for their “hickory-tough hero” Jackson = rough frontiersman & a champion of the common man. Except he was a wealthy planter who owned many slaves Denounced Adams - corrupt aristocrat & that the people had been thwarted (prevent someone from accomplishing something) by a backstairs bargain

5 “Oak” Adams Incumbent President
Adamsites - adopt the oak as the symbol of their oakenly independent candidate Though he was an aristocrat (nobleman), was far from corrupt

6 mudslinging:the use of insults and accusations, especially unjust ones, with the aim of damaging the reputation of an opponent Adams Supporters Jackson’s mother was a prostitute & his wife an adulteress Blackboarded handbills shaped like coffins, recounting his numerous duels & brawls and his hanging of 6 mutinous militiamen.

7 “General Jackson’s mother was a Common Prostitute, brought to this country by the British soldiers! She afterwards married a MULATTO man with whom she had several children, of which number GENERAL JACKSON is one.”

8 Jackson Supporters Pres. Adams purchased (with own $$) a billiard table & set of chessmen. Jacksonites = “gaming tables” & “gambling furniture” for the “presidential palace” Critics of the large sums of $$ he received over the years in federal salaries Got a servant girl for the lust of the Russian Czar (he was a pimp)
