1 Around the Sun

2 Starter Decide which statements are true and which are false.
For each false statement, write down why you think it is false. Try to write down a corrected version of the statement.

3 Objectives Learn about our solar system.
Learn some features of the planets. Produce a brochure.

4 Differences between the Planets
Sizes Distance from the Sun Orbit times Color Atmosphere

5 Model Planet Size (km) Distance from Sun (km) Time for 1 orbit (years)
Mercury 5000 0.2 Venus 12000 0.6 Earth 13000 1.0 Mars 7000 1.9 Jupiter 143000 12 Saturn 121000 30 Uranus 51000 84 Neptune 50000 165

6 Orbiting the Sun The Earth goes around the Sun once every year. (365 ¼ Earth days) The path it takes is called an orbit. The Solar System is made up of nine planets and the Sun. The solar system also contains asteroids, meteors and meteorites. These are made of ice, rock, dust and gas which are smaller than planets. Between Mars and Jupiter there is an asteroid belt where most of asteroids are found.

7 The Planets Remember: 9 planets: My Mercury Very Venus Educated Earth

9 Design a holiday brochure or poster for visiting the planets.
Task Design a holiday brochure or poster for visiting the planets. Think about: Why travel to each planets? What is good? What is there?
