Lesson 1: What Makes up Matter?
Mr. Leslie’s Class

Matter Everywhere Matter is anything that has mass and takes up space.
Everything that you can see is matter. Even things you cannot see, such as air, are matter

Matter Matter has many different properties. Color, size, shape, and texture are just a few of these properties. Turn to page E6

Atom not Adam The smallest particle of matter that has the properties of that matter is called an atom. Every object contains a very large number os atoms. There are more atoms in one grain of sand than there are people on Earth! Population on Earth = 6,692,030,277

Molecule Most matter is made up of atoms that have combined with other atoms to make a molecule. A molecule is a single particle of matter that is made up of two or more atoms joined together. The smallest particle of water is made up of 3 atoms. H2O

You cannot what… Scientists have learned from studying atoms and molecules that two objects cannot take up the same space at the same time. If you put your book on your desk, can you put your pencils in the exact same place?
