On the lined side write the definition at the top and an example or write in a sentence at the bottom the body of words used in a particular language. Vocabulary I must study my vocabulary words in order to be successful in Geography

Archipelago A group or chain of islands clustered together in a sea or ocean

5 Atoll A ring of coral that forms an island in an ocean or sea

6 Bay A body of water that extends into the land

7 Continent One of the seven great land masses on Earth

8 Delta A low, watery land formed at the mouth of a river

9 Desert A region of little to no rainfall (less than 10 inch per year)

10 Fjord A long, narrow inlet of the sea between cliffs or slopes

11 Glacier A large mass of ice that moves very slowly on land

12 Gulf                                                                                            A large body of water that is partly surrounded by land; larger than a bay

13 Island A piece of land surrounded by water

14 Isthmus A narrow strip of land connected to larger land masses

15 Lake An inland body of water

16 Mountain A high area of land with steep sides and a distinct peak

17 Ocean Large body of saltwater that surrounds a continent; covers more than 2/3 of the earth’s surface

18 Peninsula An area of land surrounded by water on three sides

19 Plain A large, low area of flat land with few trees

20 Plateau A large, flat area of land that is higher than the surrounding land

21 River A long body of water that flows over land

22 Sea A body of salt water that is partly enclosed by land

23 Strait A narrow body of water that connects to larger bodies of water

A stream or river which flows into a larger stream or river

25 Valley A low place between mountains or hills

26 Volcano A hole in the Earth’s crust that erupts and spews out lava, ashes and hot gases from deep inside the earth

27 Wetland Land area that is saturated with water such that it takes on the characteristics of a distinct ecosystem.

28 Deciduous A tree with broad leaves that tend to fall

29 Coniferous Trees with needle-like leaves
