1 Ancient China Unit 3

2 Paleolithic and Neolithic Age
Evidence of Chinese settlements date back to before 5000 B.C.E. along and between two river systems, the Huang He (Yellow River) and the Chang Jiang (Yangtze River). These people were hunters and gatherers during the Paleolithic Age and farmers during the Neolithic Age. They harvested primarily rice and water plants like lotus and water chestnuts. In the north where the climate was drier, they planted millet and wheat. Dogs, cattle, and pigs were raised in this region. Two cultures were separated. One in the east and one in the west. Over time, the two cultures blended, which is evident in art, pottery, and weapons. Life in the Neolithic Age was diverse, with some settling in towns and others being nomadic.
