2. 1920’s Women
Main Idea: Women began to assert independence, reject traditional values and demand civil rights during the carefree nature of the 1920’s.

3. Flappers
Flappers were young women rebelling against traditional values
They wore trendy clothes such as above the knee skirts and cut their in short bob’s and dyed it black
This rebelled against the traditional long hair and long skirts

4. Clashes with the Flappers
Flappers accepted the idea of dating causally
Different than traditional courting for marriage
Churches and schools protested the new ways
Double standard was created
Men were allowed sexual freedom but women were not

6. Work Changes New opportunities formed for women
Women worked during WWI but lost the jobs after the men returned
They found “women’s work” jobs instead
Women were not treated equally in the workforce
They were paid less and could not reach manager level

7. Changing Family The birth rate declined in the 1920’s
Margaret Sanger created birth control
Life was easier for the house wife due to mass production
Clothes, sliced bread, and canned foods were all purchasable
Marriage became more focused on love and companionship
Used to be out of necessity
