1 Higher Product Design What’s it all about?

2 2004 - 2005 was the first year that Higher Product Design was offered by S.Q.A.
The course gives students the opportunity to design a series of small consumer products.

3 Introduction Design Process
Whether consciously or unconsciously, we all use a some form of process to solve out daily problems – what clothes to buy, what selection of clothes will make a nice outfit, what food to put together to make a nice meal, rearranging the furniture in your room, what route to take to get to a meeting with friends on time, how to find a job etc. Some problems may scare us so much that we won’t even want to tackle it. Some are so difficult that we run into difficulties early on. So how can we learn to tackle problems with confidence so that we can find not only satisfactory answers but creative ones as well? The answer is that we have to develop a systematic approach to solving problems. In design, we refer to this methology of problem solving as the design process. The design process helps us to develop a systematic approach to solving problems. Every problem provides an opportunity and by tackling each problem in a positive way we can make the most of the opportunity provided. Applying the design process helps us to consider every angle and arrive at a well considered solution – there are never “right” or “wrong” solutions, only “better” or “worse”, “appropriate” or “inappropriate”.

4 Aims of the course The aims of this Course are to develop:
the ability to produce solutions to design tasks by applying knowledge, understanding and problem solving skills knowledge and understanding of the process and principles of designing the ability to analyse and clarify problems in a design context an understanding of the issues which influence the design of products the application of effective graphic and modelling techniques the ability to effectively communicate and justify solutions to design tasks

5 Unit 1 – Design Analysis The unit focuses on the initial stages of the design process: investigating problems and setting out criteria for the solution. You must be aware of the complete design process and the people involved in it. You must also be aware of the issues which affect the design of products. Outcomes Evaluate a commercial product Establish a design specification from a brief

6 Unit 2 – Developing Design Proposals
In this unit you will generate and develop ideas to satisfy a specification and work toward a solution through design activity. You will use written, graphical and modelling techniques to convey your ideas and produce a potential solution. Outcomes Produce a design proposal. Use graphic techniques during the production of a design proposal. Use modelling techniques during the production of a design proposal.

7 Graphic Techniques The 'graphic techniques' folio builds on sketching techniques that students have used throughout Standard Grade Craft & Design, Graph Comm and Art & Design. It helps students develop their sketching skills, in preparation for the design assignments. You will learn various techniques:- sketching, pencil/marker/ pastel rendering, Pictorial Views i.e Isometric, Perspective, Orthographic (NAB), Modelling will also be included in this unit.

10 Unit 3 – Manufacturing Products
In this unit you will develop knowledge and understanding of commercial manufacturing processes, systems and materials and why they are used for particular products. You will also produce an orthographic drawing to convey information required for the manufacture of products. Outcomes Explain why particular materials are used for the manufacture of the commercial products. Explain why particular processes and systems are used for the manufacture of commercial products. Produce an orthographic drawing for use in the manufacture of s given product.

11 Materials & Processes We will learn about various Materials & Processes in the form of formal “lectures”. These lectures will be given by you! In groups of two you will have a specific material/process which you will research & investigate. You will then present your finding’s to your class mates. *N.B the presentation can be in any format, but must include a mind map*

12 The Exam The course assessment of Higher/Intermediate 2 Product Design will consist of two equally weighted Components: Question Paper (2 hours/ 1hr 30 mins) 70 marks/50 marks Design Assignment marks/ 50 marks
