1 The Congress of Vienna 1814 - 1815

2 Napoleon’s Tomb

3 What Happened After Napoleon?
Europe was very unstable European leaders wanted to restore peace and create stability A series of meetings, known as the Congress of Vienna, were organized to figure out how to fix Europe

4 Klemens von Metternich
Leaders from Britain, France, Austria, Russia and Prussia met in Vienna for the meetings The most influential leader was Prince Klemens von Metternich (Austria) He did not believe in democracy

5 Goals of the Congress of Vienna
The leaders came up with 3 goals Contain France: Surround France with stronger countries Restore the Balance of Power: no country should ever have too much power Restore Royal Families: return the legitimate kings and queens of Europe to their thrones (Louis XVIII- France)

6 The Concert of Europe Many European countries still feared revolutions
A series of alliances were devised by Metternich to help Europe maintain the balance of power These alliances would assure that nations would help each other if any revolutions broke out

7 Revolution of 1848 in France
Charles X- wanted Absolute Monarchy, which quickly became unpopular- Fled to Great Britain Under Louis Phillippe (1830)- Mobs overturned the monarchy (AGAIN) & set up a Republic (1848) Louis-Napoleon became President (Napoleon’s Nephew, later crowned Emperor)- ruled as a monarch 1875- Republic set up again in France!!!

8 Take Away Idea Despite years of revolution and attempts at democracy, the French were really no closer in achieving that goal. The French Revolution is an interesting example of how attempts at government leadership without the consent of the people can be dangerous. The French Revolution has also shown that the Rule of Law is crucial in avoiding a tyranny, as Plato argued centuries earlier.
