1 Science Fair By: Charity Lane Mr.Gorden period 4

2 Question: What different health problems can you have with different sweeteners?

3 What is the background to why you wanted to pick this experiment?
The reason why I wanted to do this experiment because of my dad. One day we were in the car and it was a long ride to get to our destination. On the way back we were talking about the science fair, like what I should do. I was saying that with my last experiment that I like to see what happens to people when they eat or drink a substance. So my dad brought up that idea and I liked it and used it.

4 If……. the sweetener has lots of side effects that could happen to you when eaten a lot
Then…….it could cause body damage in some shape or form. Hypothesis

5 Independent Variable (What I will be changing in this): The Sweeteners
Dependent Variable (What will respond to the change):The side effects that will happen for a certain period of time Constant Variable(What must remain the same):1:the amount of substance 2:amount of sweetener 3:the amount of time that person has the sweetener Variables

6 Procedures 1st step: go home and get on the computer 2nd step:get on Google 3rd step: look up sweeteners with health problems 4th step: then go on to the websites of your choice 5th step :record the sweeteners that you found and some health problems or some that do not have health problems for extra 6th step: go over the information that you have and add more if needed

7 Data 1 Read more: Erythritol is a sugar alcohol. Erythritol, when consumed in large quantities can cause certain gastric side effects since erythritol is easily absorbed, it will not cause gastric problems unlike other sugar substitutes. Frequent consumers of erythritol have complained of the product's laxative effect. However, most people should be safely able to ingest a gram of erythritol without encountering the laxative effect, as erythritol is not digested by the large intestine like most alcohol sugars. People who are allergic to have come down with urticarial .Erythritol is absorbed into your bloodstream, but does not readily enter any of your body's cells and is usually excreted through your urine. Large amounts of erythritol ingestion may cause gastrointestinal distress due to your body's inability to process sugar alcohols efficiently. Symptoms of gastrointestinal distress related to erythritol ingestion include nausea, stomach cramps, vomiting, headache and diarrhea.

8 Data 2 Maple Syrup Maple syrup urine disease (MSUD) is a rare, inherited metabolic disorder. With MSUD, the body cannot break down certain amino acids. Individuals who have the disease produce urine that has a distinctive maple syrup odor. When untreated, MSUD can cause significant physical and neurological problems. There are four subtypes of MSUD. All are inherited genetic disorders Classic MSUD Intermediate MSUD Intermittent MSUD Thiamine-responsive MSUD That is why new research on maple syrup’s beneficial impact on the liver has brought culinary excitement to people managing a chronic liver ailment.at least 25 million Americans have some form of liver disease. Equivalent to about one in every 12 people, these individuals have a continual battle raging in their liver. This daily battle pits the body’s attempt to preserve functioning liver cells against progressive liver damage. Unfortunately, excess fat, a viral infection, toxin exposure and the other sources of chronic liver disease are capable of impeding this organ’s ability to function.

9 Aspartame 92 different health side effects associated with aspartame consumption. Aspartame dissolves into solution and can therefore travel throughout the body and deposit within any tissue. The body digests aspartame unlike saccharin, which does not break down within humans. The multitude of aspartame side effects are indicative to your genetic individuality and physical weaknesses. It is important to put two and two together, nonetheless, and identify which side effects aspartame is creating within you. According to Lendon Smith, M.D. there is an enormous population suffering from side effects associated with aspartame, yet have no idea why drugs, supplements and herbs don’t relieve their symptoms. Then, there are users who don’t ‘appear’ to suffer immediate reactions at all. Even these individuals are susceptible to the long-term damage caused by excitatory amino acids, phenylalanine, methanol, and DKP. Adverse reactions and side effects of aspartame include:

10 Conclusion My question for the science fair is, What different health problems can you have with different sweeteners? My experiment is were I researched a couple of different sugars in this cause I showed one that is a natural sweetener, another is a sugar alcohol, the other one is a artificial sweetener. I look up the different side effect to that type. Some of the data for this project is that Aspartame has 92 different side effects and possibly more. Also that you can get some different diseases from some different sweeteners. My hypothosis and my data are really close to the same. I am saying that because I found out that there are lots of side effects and other thing to that sweetener.I have learned lots of things during this project. It was really fun finding new things about like maple syrup. Some problems that I have is trying to see if some of the other websites had the same information, or if the they didn’t have the same information I didn’t really use that information just to be safe.
