1 Homework: Homework Packet 12 Biotech QUEST on Friday
Warm up: What is the advantage of knowing what each of your genes codes for? Flush: Coffee, tea, or neither? Homework: Homework Packet 12 Biotech QUEST on Friday

2 GMO’s Wrap Up What do you guys think? Pro/Con?
What does the science say? Should we eat GMOs?

3 Human Genome Project Directions: read/annotate the ‘fact sheet’ and answer these questions on the back of the reading paper. Do NOT write the question. 1. What was the ultimate goal of the human genome project? How did they accomplish this? 2. Explain three major results of the human genome project. 3. What role does ethics play in the human genome project? 4. What future research still needs to be done?

4 Human Genome Project

5 Human Genome Project Goal: to sequence the entire human genome to know all 3 billion letters that make up our genetic code Reasons: To have a ‘reference’ genome used for comparison to begin to determine the cause of various genetic disorders. Overall this project led to a few conclusions 1. Humans have less genes than they thought 2. Genetics is more complicated than they thought (epigenetics) 3. If you know what gene is causing a disease, you can target treatment to just that gene

6 Gene Therapy Gene therapy aims to treat genetic disorder by…
Replacing a mutated gene that causes disease with a healthy copy of the gene. Inactivating, or “knocking out,” a mutated gene that is functioning improperly. Introducing a new gene into the body to help fight a disease.

7 Viruses Viruses are non-living
They attach to your cells, insert their DNA and take over your cell machinery They force your cells to go through protein synthesis, to make more viral proteins They assemble more virions and get released from the cell

8 Viruses and Gene Therapy
Since viruses put their DNA into your cells, they can be used a vector for ‘healthy genes’ A non-pathogenic virus (adenovirus) is used so it won’t cause a disease The virus delivers the new gene to the cell, and the cell will begin to make the new, healthy protein

9 Viruses and Gene Therapy
Cystic Fibrosis Severe Combined Immunodeficiency (SCID)

10 What are three uses for recombinant DNA/transgenic organisms?
Homework packet 12- due tomorrow! BIOTECH QUEST TOMORROW!

11 Gene Editing Ethics Treat adults with genetic diseases
Gene Editing Now Gene Editing in the Future? Treat adults with genetic diseases Grow plants resistant to disease Grow plants and animals that will be larger for human food consumption Edit embryos’ DNA for desired physical traits Edit embryos’ DNA to eliminate any genetic diseases Edit embryos’ DNA to control traits for intelligence Edit embryos’ DNA to control gender In your groups, sort these into two groups: ethical and unethical. THEN: for each item, write a 2-3 sentence description of how you think the government or science should regulate these practices.
