2 Warm Up Have your values changed over time to conflict with those of your parents? Do you have any vocational plans/goals? What are they?

3 After Childhood Adolescence: the period between childhood and adulthood Begins with the onset of puberty Hormones are released, which cause physical changes

4 Puberty In females, the hormones Estrogen and Progesterone are released In males, the hormone Testosterone is released These hormones are key in the development of sex characteristics Sex characteristics are the physical attributes connected to the gender one is assigned at birth

5 Two Types of Sex Characteristics
Primary sex characteristics: Directly related to the production or maturity of reproductive cells, or gametes Female gametes are ova (eggs), male gametes are sperm Secondary sex characteristics: Other changes not directly associated with reproductive cells that occur during puberty

Primary Maturity of eggs Secondary Breasts develop Waistline narrows Hips widen Body fat increases Menstruation starts Body hair appears All permanent teeth grow in Perspiration increases

Primary Testes begin to produce sperm Secondary Facial and body hair develops Voice deepens Shoulders broaden Muscles develop Hairline begins to recede All permanent teeth grow in Perspiration increases

14 Mental and Emotional Changes
Your brain continues to develop throughout adolescence Become increasingly capable of solving problems in more complex ways Most adolescents begin to search for meaning, personal values, and a sense of self

16 Social Changes Friends and acquaintances are an important part of a teen’s social experience Begin to appreciate social and cultural diversity Social encounters may challenge what you believe in and what you think is right and wrong

17 Accomplishments in Adolescence
Emotional and Psychological Independence Support and guidance from your family helps Develop confidence and self-esteem A sort of in-between phase occurs, and this can be confusing Personal Values Develop your own ideas about morals Vocational Goals Control over Behaviors Better decision-making

18 Activity As we mature, our identities are changing. We are constantly bombarded with statistics about teens, but do they hold any water? Please answer the following questions anonomously on a separate piece of paper. You may choose not to answer any number of questions, but if you do answer, please do so honestly.

20 Statistics About 11% of teens have experienced depression
20% of teens are "rarely" or "never" happy with their body image About 5% of teenagers identify as something other than heterosexual/heteroromantic Almost four out of every ten high school seniors reports ever having smoked cigarette By age 15, approximately 50 percent of students have had at least one drink A report of child abuse is made every 10 seconds An average 25% of people self harm by age 20 Each day in our nation there are an average of over 5,400 suicide attempts made by young people grades 7-12

21 Maturity Most people hit physical maturity (the point at which the physical body and all its organs are fully developed) in late adolescence or their early twenties Adulthood is not reached until one is developed emotionally Emotional maturity is the state in which the mental and emotional capabilities of an individual are fully developed

22 Stage of Adulthood Adult years are made of three different stages
every stage can be characterized by its own accomplishments and is associated with a goal that involves a person's relationships with other people there are three stages of adulthood Young Adulthood this stage the age last from 19 to 40 years of age the goal of this stage is to develop intimacy Middle Adulthood is from 40 and 65 this is to develop a sense of having contributed to society Late Adulthood this stage last from the age of 65 to death the goal for this age is to feel satisfied with his life

23 Marriage most people will get married because they fall in love and ready to enter into a lasting relationship married couple share togetherness and support each other in hard as well good time

24 Middle Adulthood Middle adulthood spans between ages 40-65
Life is full of transitions, critical changes that occur at all stages of life. These changes can include family and individual accomplishments. these accomplishments can enhance a person’s physical, mental, and emotional health during adulthood.
