9 Let’s review! We SHOULD know the parts, function, and care of each system. Digestive, Excretory, Circulatory. Raise your HAND – not your VOICE – to share each.

10 The Digestive System The digestive system has 3 main functions:
It breaks down food into particles that the body can use. It absorbs nutrients into the blood. It eliminates waste from the body. Mouth Esophagus

11 The Excretory system Eliminates waste from the body.

12 What does it do for us? Our circulatory system…
Delivers necessary materials (like oxygen and sugar) to the entire body in the blood, Removes waste products from cells, and Helps fight disease by transporting immune cells in the blood.

15 What carries the blood? BLOOD VESSELS are the hollow tubes that carry your blood around your body. There are 3 TYPES: ARTERIES CAPILLARIES VEINS

16 What is your blood? Red Blood Cells carry oxygen.
White blood cells fight disease. Platelets form blood clots to stop you from bleeding too much.

17 So what happens if you don’t take care of your circulatory system?
Not enough good stuff to your body Build up of bad stuff in your body Heart Attack! (video is about 23 minutes) See video – be sure to explain that the video is older and is made in the UK so language is different. For example, at one point the character asks if something is “on the lorrie” – which means truck. He’s asking if the shipment is on the truck.

18 Now – the Respiratory System
Take notes on the worksheet given. Fill in the blanks – but pay attention so that the class can progress. If you talk/play instead of writing, you will lose out and be left behind.

19 What is the RESPIRATORY SYSTEM?
- Breathe in and out… What is the RESPIRATORY SYSTEM? The system of the body that deals with BREATHING. It consists of the NOSE, PHARYNX, TRACHEA, BRONCHIAL TUBES, and LUNGS.

20 What is the FUNCTION of the Respiratory System?
- Breathe in and out… What is the FUNCTION of the Respiratory System? To DELIVER OXYGEN to the body. To REMOVE CARBON DIOXIDE from the body.

21 Why does the body need oxygen?
- Breathe in and out… Why does the body need oxygen? The body’s CELLS use OXYGEN to release ENERGY to the body. CELLULAR RESPIRATION is the CHEMICAL REACTION that uses GLUCOSE & OXYGEN to release ENERGY. CARBON DIOXIDE is a WASTE PRODUCT of this chemical reaction.

22 Which systems work together?
- Breathe in and out… Which systems work together? RESPIRATORY SYSTEM gets OXYGEN from the air. DIGESTIVE SYSTEM gets GLUCOSE from food. CIRCULATORY SYSTEM DELIVERS oxygen and glucose to cells. In the cells, respiration uses glucose and oxygen to release ENERGY.

- Breathe in and out… What path does AIR follow? NOSE PHARYNX TRACHEA BRONCHIAL TUBES LUNGS (alveoli)

24 What happens in each part?
- Breathe in and out… What happens in each part? NOSE – in the nasal cavity, the air is: Warmed, FILTERED, and moistened. (Mucus and nasal hairs keep out dust, pollen and other particles). PHARYNX – air passes through the THROAT when breathing. The EPIGLOTTIS covers the trachea when you SWALLOW to prevent FOOD from entering the trachea when you eat/drink.

- Breathe in and out… What happens in each part? TRACHEA – is the WINDPIPE that leads to the lungs. It is a TUBE with RINGS OF CARTILAGE. BRONCHIAL TUBES – are the the short tubes that branch off the trachea TO CARRY AIR TO the LUNGS.

- Breathe in and out… What happens in each part? LUNGS – inside the lungs, the bronchi branch into SMALLER TUBES. At the end of the smallest tubes, are structures called ALVEOLI. ALVEOLI – are AIR SACS, surrounded by CAPILLARIES. This where BLOOD picks up OXYGEN and gets rid of CARBON DIOXIDE.

27 What happens in the ALVEOLI?
- Breathe in and out… GAS EXCHANGE - Blood from the body enters the lungs. In the alveoli, the blood GETS RID OF CARBON DIOXIDE and PICKS UP OXYGEN before returning to the heart to take oxygen to rest of the body.

29 How are BREATHING & SPEAKING related?
Air that you BREATHE OUT when you exhale also helps you SPEAK. Your LARYNX is your VOICE BOX which has 2 VOCAL CHORDS that move and produce sound when air passes through the opening between them. Larynx

31 Heart Rate Activity 2nd and 4th period classes are likely able to handle this – and work well with their “elbow” partner – the one beside them. If there are three at a table, they may all work together OR any ONE person may choose to work independently. 3rd period should NOT do this – skip it. Only do with 2nd and 4th IF TIME ALLOWS!

32 If it is difficult to find your pulse (the pressure of your heart beat) in your wrist, you might try two fingers on the neck – by the throat.

33 How to collect data Count the number of pulse beats in 20 seconds.
Physical activity Heart rate Sitting in a chair standing Walking in place (2 min) Speed walk in place (2 min) Jogging in place (2 min) 30 jumping jacks Running in place (2 min) Count the number of pulse beats in 20 seconds. Use your data to create a bar graph. Careful – label each axis, determine numbers to fit on the axis.

36 Let’s DO some stuff! Posters of body systems. Graph your actions!!
Straw maze Lung demo Not sure that I would do these, but if time allows – posters of body systems learned so far, graphing the heart rate – big version on poster, create a maze (tape straws to cardboard and use a straw to blow a cotton ball through the maze), compare blowing through a “regular” straw to blowing through a coffee stirrer straw or a jumbo (ice cream) straw…compare to asthma, create a bottle representation of a lung.
