1. State and Local (Extension)
All: View the Annenberg Institute video on the role of the mayor. As you view, note how to the role of the local executive branch is similar that of the federal level. Once you finish viewing, draft a 1/4 to 1/3 page reflection on the role of the mayor, making sure to include the types of traits you would look for in a potential mayor, as well as the benefits of a strong/effective mayor and the potential struggles with a weak mayor.
Honors: From the links provided, view 30 minutes total of town/city council meetings. You must document your entire viewing schedule, and each segment viewed must be at least 5 minutes long. Your final product will be a set of viewing notes, and a summative reflection on council process.
Academic: You must locate three articles from local news sources that relate to action taken by city or town councils. You are restricted to cities/towns in Wake, Durham, or Orange counties. For each article, provide the link, title, summary of what issue was being addressed, the outcome, and your own views on the issue at hand.
