Project Management Phases Class 6

Initiation & Planning – Agenda Overview of the project management phases Midterm paper details

SDLC Project Identification & Selection Project Initiation & Planning ** Analysis Logical Design Physical Design Implementation Maintenance

Why Are We Doing This? Transforms a vague system request document into a tangible project description. Set up communication plan – SA&D requires effective communication between the systems analysts, users, and management. Beginning of the Baseline Project Plan.

Project Mgt Process Project Initiation Project Planning Project Execution Project Close-down

Project initiation steps Activities to assist in organizing a team to conduct project planning (getting to know you) 1. 2. 3. 4.

Proj planning steps Defining clear, discrete activities and the work needed to complete each activity within a single project. 1. Define the problem A. B.

Project planning 2. Define your objectives A. B.

Project Planning continued 3. Confirm project feasibility A. B.

Project Planning continued 4. Produce the project schedule A. B. C.

Initiation and planning (in a nutshell) This is the point where a systems analyst begins to play a major role in the systems development process.

Project Execution 3 rd phase in which the plans created in the prior phases are put into action. Analysis, design, and implementation of SDLC Managing changes to baseline project plan

Project Execution Steps Executing the BPP Monitoring the project progress against the BPP Managing changes to the BPP Managing the project workbook Communicating the project status

Project Close-down Final phase: focuses on bringing a project to an end. Assessments Post Project reviews Determine strengths and weaknesses of project deliverables Determine strengths and weaknesses of processes used to create system Closing the customer contract Signing on the dotted line

Question Which of the four phases of the project management process is most challenging? Why?

Homework for next Class period: Read through your application – Come up with at least 3 things you think are problems that the company/department is facing.

Baseline Project Plan (BPP) Once all of the prior planning activities have been completed, you will be able to begin developing a baseline project plan. This baseline plan reflects the best estimate of the project’s task and resource requirements and is used to guide the next project phase – analysis. Will probably end up modifying throughout project life.

BPP Contains all the info collected during the Project Initiation and Planning and Analysis Reflects best estimate of project’s scope, benefits, costs, risks, and resource requirements Specifies general to detailed project activities for the phases of the SDLC Used by the project selection committee to decide whether the project continues

Midterm Paper Cover Page Title, date, group name, members Table of Contents Executive Overview Brief Description of Client & Potential Users
