1 French LA Review Game

2 What was the relationship like between French settlers/leaders and Native Americans? Why did settlers often want native land? There was a struggle for power between these two groups, Native Americans had the land the French wanted. If you remember this is what started the Natchez Uprising. French settlers wanted the fertile land for farming that the Native groups had control of. This led to fighting between the French settlers and some Native tribes.

3 How did cultural diffusion with the French change Native American culture? Think trade.
Native cultures and lifestyles began to change when the French arrived, ex: use of guns.

4 How did the arrival of European explorers and settlers challenge Native Americans living in Louisiana, think about the population change after European colonization? Loss of land and spread of disease.

5 What were the Spanish original intentions regarding exploration, aka what did they want to find? They were willing to do this by any means necessary, what does that mean? The Spanish, De Soto, were looking for gold. They never found any. They were willing to kill, torture, and steal to find the gold they were searching for.

6 What was De Soto buried off the banks of the Mississippi River?
to hide he wasn’t a deity from the natives, his men were afraid of being attacked if they found out.

7 Who made France’s claim to LA? Who was the land named after?
La Salle, King Louis XIV

Shows how the French brought Catholicism to LA. As well as the importance of that religion to the French. What is the significance of the cross in this picture? Think what they were bringing with them to LA (culture).

12 What was the English Turn incident? Why is it important?
Bienville stopped British soldiers and settlers from moving further up the Mississippi River by convincing that he had several large ships and soldiers ready to fight. This is important because it is yet another time Bienville helped LA, but also because it prevented the English from settling the territory.

13 What is a proprietorship
What is a proprietorship? Why would King Louis XIV choose this method of governing the colony after he was unable to turn a profit on LA? A proprietorship includes a business man taking over LA and being in charge of getting settlers and supplies to and from the colony. Any profit made can be kept except a small percentage that goes to King Louis. King Louis picked this method because he was tired of losing money in LA.

14 What did Crozat and Cadillac introduce to LA in an effort to make LA profitable? Hint: plants and a cultural group brought here against their own will. Tobacco and Indigo; slaves.

15 Why did the Company of the Indies generate so much profit in the early years?
As the number of people wanting to invest rose, so did the price of the shares, creating a rise in the value of the company.

16 What caused the Mississippi Bubble to burst?
Expenses of the colony grew and it became impossible to maintain profit levels, so investors began to demand payments in cash. John Law left the country, taking all the investors’ money with him, so investors could not be paid.

17 Why is New Orleans nicknamed the Crescent City?
New Orleans was built in a bend, or crescent, of the Mississippi River.

18 What is mercantilism and why did it fail in French LA?
Mercantilism is the idea that a mother country has colonies that send her raw materials, then are made into finished goods and sold back to the colony at a profit. This failed in LA because supplies weren’t consistent so the French settlers traded with the Spanish, British, and Native Americans instead.

19 Why is Bienville known as the Father of LA and what are some of his accomplishments that got him this nickname? English Turn, Founding NOLA, Making Friends with Native Americans, Always in LA when we needed him, Found the mouth of the Mississippi after La Salle lost it.

How did John Law populate the colony? (Hint: Think propaganda and dog catcher) Lied to people about how great LA was, also grabbed people from prisons and women off the street to send to LA.

Who were the Ursuline Nuns and Casket Girls? Why did they come to LA? Impact? Ursuline Nuns came to work in a hospital and to teach religion. Casket girls were young French girls meant for marriage

23 How did France’s war with England affect the Louisiana colony?
Colonists began trading with the Spanish and English for supplies, which caused mercantilism not to work and LA remained unprofitable.

The river was a central part of trade routes in North America.

Rivers (good for trade and fertile soil), flat land, good climate for farming.
