1 Ways to get involved: Content and Development Opportunities Wolfgang Bauer

2 mc3: multimedia collaborative content creation
Not-so-desirable model (1): Every person has to create a complete course from scratch Not-so-desirable model (2): Buy complete course off the shelf from a commercial publisher More efficient: Fully modularized system, multiple authors Semi-independent information units (derivation, homework problem, video clip, example, graphic, applet, ...) Common navigation interface Synchronized servers to store resources Drag-and-drop course assembly

3 Further reading ... (in package)

4 NSF ITR Grant Investigation of a Model for Online Resource Creation and Sharing in Educational Settings Gerd Kortemeyer (PI) W.B., Deborah Kashy, Edwin Kashy,Cheri Speier (co-PIs) Sept. 2000: Funded at M$2.1 for 5 years

5 Scope of Grant Activities
Beta-test within Michigan State University (supported by MSU, in progress) Pilot-test involving a set of about ten institutions, comprised of university departments, community colleges and high schools (this conference) Bringing together the stakeholders (faculty, administrators, commercial business (e.g., publishers) and formation of this online community (supported by the grant) Project evaluation and dissemination (supported by grant) Establishment of a non-profit service entity and production deployment (indicator of success)

6 Construction of New Courses
Database of individual resources Drag-and-drop object assembly Resource meta-data (Dublin Core, IMS): Author, date, topic Subject categories, keywords Reviewer feedback (teachers, students) Usage statistics (Price !!!) Object economy with multiple feedback loops Principles of self-organization: Evolution-like selection rules Sum is bigger than its parts

7 Exam Engine Objective evaluation of all materials: construct an automated exam engine that will produce randomized and/or individualized tests without the instructor having the need or even the opportunity to select the problems. Testing of effectiveness of teaching methods Almost no work in creating exams Students can obtain practice exams Teachers and learners collaborate to achieve optimal performance on objective tests No more questions like “Will this be on the exam?”

8 Multiple Representations of Knowledge
Blah, blah, blah, ... Student can select from pull-down menu: System remembers preferences and customizes learning experiences for each student  Genetic algorithms In our daily language the word "momentum" is used to indicate that an object or a person is in motion, and that it will take a certain force to change this motion. A football team, for example, which is on a winning streak is said to have 'momentum going'.

10 What exists? ~ 3000 html pages ~ 2000 gif or jpg files
~ 150 QuickTime movies (lecture demonstrations, animations, derivations) ~ 70 java applets ~ 1500 interactively graded “numerical” homework problems 6 interactively graded multiple choice practice exams with solutions (~150 individual problems) All (~3000, at least 2 for sure) CAPA problems will be added automatically

11 Educational Object Economy

12 Flow of Money (?)

13 Open Questions Exact publishing process for resources on the network
Reviewing, editing Who decides what gets in? Peer review(!) Compatibility of styles Notation (RevTeX, AMS, …) Colors, backgrounds, logos, … Common user interface for applets, … Hyperlinks into other resources
