1 Circulation Mr. Lockhart

2 Functions of the Circulatory System
Transport oxygen, nutrients, and waste throughout the body Helps regulate body temperature Helps fight infection Functions of the Circulatory System

3 Transports oxygen, nutrients, and waste throughout the body
The circulatory system is made up of your heart, your blood, your arteries, your veins, and your capillaries. These act as “highways” that reach every single part of your body, every last cell. Your body uses these “highways” to deliver oxygen from your respiratory system, nutrients from your digestive system, and to collect waste products from your body’s cells to take to the excretory system. Transports oxygen, nutrients, and waste throughout the body

4 Helps regulate body temperature
Your circulatory system can change the amount of blood flowing through the skin to carry heat away from the body, or to prevent a loss of heat. This directly relates to homeostasis! Helps regulate body temperature

5 Starting at the heart of the matter
The heart is responsible for moving your blood through your blood vessels (arteries, veins, capillaries.) The heart is made of cardiac muscle which expands and fills up with blood, then contracts and pushes the blood out. Starting at the heart of the matter

7 Arteries carry lots of blood away from the heart, toward the capillaries.
They most often contain oxygenated blood. We think of this kind of blood as “red.” Veins carry blood toward the heart. They most often contain deoxygenated blood. We think of this kind of blood as “blue.” (It’s not really blue) Arteries and Veins

8 Capillaries are very thin, very small pockets that fill up with blood.
They are so thin, that the oxygen atoms in the blood can move through them and into the body cells that need the oxygen. Waste is also collected in the capillaries, they act like oxygen/nutrient delivery trucks and garbage collection trucks. Capillaries provide the cells with oxygen and nutrients while collecting any waste the cells have produced and taking it away. Capillaries

9 Blood Blood is mostly water. There are four main components of blood
Red blood cells (RBCs, or erythrocytes) Hemoglobin White blood cells (WBCs or leukocytes) Platelets Blood

10 Blood Blood also contains: Nutrients from the digestive system
Red blood cells that carry oxygen from the respiratory system Waste products to be taken to the excretory system Blood
