1 Bell Work: Guided Reading
Read page 5 of the textbook....then answer the following questions(write the questions and answers): Why is the ozone layer important? What is the troposphere? What could happen if plants/animals are overexposed to ultraviolet radiation (UVB)?

2 Introduction: Do you think about chemistry when you hit snooze on your alarm clock, cook and eat dinner, start your car, or switch on your bedroom light? Probably not, but you should. Things work and change all around you because of chemistry.

3 What is Chemistry?

4 Objectives: TLW describe the field of chemistry and how it relates to everyday life. TLW understand why chemistry is important and how it relates to matter.

5 Spi’s, CLE’s, and CCSS’s:
CLE 3221.Inq.1 Recognize that science is a progressive endeavor that reevaluates and extends what is already accepted. CLE Investigate the characteristic properties of matter. CCSS RST Analyze how the text structures information or ideas into categories or hierarchies, demonstrating understanding of the information or ideas.

6 What is chemistry? Chemistry is the study of everything around us.
It is important that we study these things because they affect our lives on a daily basis.

7 What is the Ozone layer? An absorbent layer of oxygen in earth’s atmosphere that protects us from the harmful effects of ultraviolet radiation from the sun.

8 What are Chlorofluorocarbons?
A substance that consists of chlorine, fluorine, and carbon.

9 What are the Characteristics of Matter?
Substance – definite uniform composition(chemical). Matter-anything that takes up space. Mass-the amount of matter Weight- the measure of the amount of matter plus the gravitational pull that acts on that matter. Model- a visual, verbal, or mathematical representation of experimental data.

10 Understanding Check: Vocabulary Word Definition Illustration
Chemistry 2. A measurement that reflects the amount of matter. weight 4. Observation Hypothesis Experiments Collect/Analyze Data Conclusion

11 Guided Reading Assignment:
The Benefits of Chemistry Chemists are an important part of the team of scientists that solve many of the problems or issues we face today. Chemists are not only involved in resolving the ozone depletion problem. They are also involved in finding cures or vaccines for diseases, such as, AIDS and influenza See page 22 of textbook.

12 Summative Assessment Where is the ozone located in Earth’s atmosphere?
Which measurement depends on gravitational force- weight or mass? Why? What are CFC’s and what were they used for? What 3 elements are found in chlorofluorocarbons? What is chemistry?
