Presentation on theme: "Energy in Living Things"— Presentation transcript:

1 Energy in Living Things
Do Now: (on handout) Group the 8 different organisms shown into categories. You may use as many different categories as you like, but should have a reason for placing each member where you do.

2 Autotrophs vs. Heterotrophs
Autotrophs are organisms (like plants) that make their own food (“-troph” means “eater”, autotroph means “self-eater”) Heterotrophs get energy by ingesting other organisms (i.e animals) (“-hetero” = “different”) Try to decide which of the 8 are autotrophs!

3 Most Autotrophs do Photosynthesis

4 Heterotrophs take in chemical energy, not light energy.

6 Photosynthesis as a Process

7 Cellular Respiration Heterotrophs can’t make their own food, like autotrophs can. The process of cellular respiration is how organisms get the energy they need from the food they take in.

8 Cellular Respiration How heterotrophs get energy out of the organic chemicals they eat

9 The Carbon Cycle of Life

11 Check your Notes The following terms should appear somewhere in your notes for today: Autotroph Heterotroph Photosynthesis Light reactions, Calvin Cycle Cellular Respiration Glycolysis, fermentation, and aerobic respiration
