1 Hunger Day 20th‒22nd September
Care. Participate. Help. Marjaana Malkamäki

2 What is Hunger Day? Hunger Day is the biggest annual fund-raising campaign arranged by the Finnish Red Cross. Funds are collected for the Disaster Relief Fund, which allows the Red Cross to operate in both Finland and abroad. The funds in the Disaster Relief Fund can be used to provide help quickly, because the donations are not bound to a specific destination.

3 Hunger Day helps those close by as well
The Red Cross is ready to help in Finland as well. We provide aid to people who have lost their homes in fires, for example. Donated funds help provide the victims of fires with clothing, emergency accommodation and food. Jarkko Mikkonen & Tatu Blomqvist

4 Volunteers bring help where it’s needed
The volunteers of the Red Cross support the authorities in sudden accident situations by helping search for missing persons and distributing aid, for example. Last autumn following the stabbings in Turku, help was provided to 2,500 people shaken by the incident. Emilia Kangasluoma

5 Help in the middle of a conflict
Cox’s Bazar in Bangladesh is currently in the midst of a massive humanitarian crisis. Nearly a million people, the majority of whom are women and children, have fled to the area from Myanmar. The conditions in the refugee camps are dire. Michael Drost-Hansen

6 Volunteers bring help where it’s needed
Last autumn, we sent a field hospital to Bangladesh to help people fleeing from Myanmar. The 24-hour-a-day hospital treats an average of a hundred patients a day. Jakob Dall

7 Help in the middle of a conflict
The Red Cross helps those who find themselves in the midst of conflict, people in the weakest possible position. Donations are used to help those who have fled from their homes due to conflicts, for example in Syria and Yemen. Thomas Glass

8 What does money buy? Mosquito nets for a family
Four canisters of water A maternity package A package of blankets 100kg millet A course of antibiotics for curing infections for 100 children A bicycle for a local health teacher A share in a field hospital

9 Anyone can join in! Approximately 20,000 volunteers participate in Hunger Day every year. Anyone can act as a box collector. Last year, Hunger Day generated 4.2 million euros. Maria Santto

10 So why choose Hunger Day and the Red Cross?
The collection funds are strictly monitored. No less than 85% of the proceeds will go towards aid work. The values of the Red Cross, i.e. humanity, neutrality and its voluntary nature, are easy for everyone to accept. 96% of Finnish people know the Red Cross, and the organisation is the most trust-worthy organisation in Finland* * TNS gallup: Trust Barometer 2016

11 This Hunger Day is the 38th of its kind.
