1 Take out notebook, folder, pencil box and agenda.
Walk-In Take out notebook, folder, pencil box and agenda. At the back, answer in sentences: Write down all the organs or body parts that you can think of that help with the process of breathing.

2 The respiratory system

3 Watch for: organs used for breathing, and each organ’s function.
Video clip Watch this video clip in Discovery Education, Introduction to the Respiratory Organs (9:02), to build background. Watch for: organs used for breathing, and each organ’s function.

4 Label the parts as we discuss the respiratory organs.
Respiratory diagram Label the parts as we discuss the respiratory organs.

5 Set Up notebook for two-column notes
Label the left column ORGAN, the right column FUNCTION.

6 Respiratory system The organs that help the body breathe in air and get oxygen, and to breathe out air and remove carbon dioxide.

7 Nose and mouth (nasal cavity)
Allow air to enter body, warms it up, filters out dust. Lets air leave the body.

8 Opens to let food down esophagus, closes to let air go down trachea.
epiglottis Opens to let food down esophagus, closes to let air go down trachea.

9 “Voice box”, has vocal cords that produce sounds and speech.
larynx “Voice box”, has vocal cords that produce sounds and speech.

10 “windpipe” that air flows down into lungs.
trachea “windpipe” that air flows down into lungs.

11 Each bronchus leads from trachea into each lung.
Bronchi Each bronchus leads from trachea into each lung. Two bronchi in all.

12 Organs used for breathing in oxygen and releasing carbon dioxide.
lungs Organs used for breathing in oxygen and releasing carbon dioxide.

13 Connect from the bronchi to alveoli
Bronchial tubes Connect from the bronchi to alveoli

14 Lungs are filled with alveoli.
Tiny air sacs like balloons that exchange oxygen and carbon dioxide through the blood. Lungs are filled with alveoli.

15 Dome-shaped muscle that pulls air in and out of lungs.
diaphragm Dome-shaped muscle that pulls air in and out of lungs.

16 Can you control your breathing?
Try these controlled breaths! To what extent do you have control over your respiratory organs?

17 Practice – lift the flap breathing book!
Fold your paper as directed on your handout. Cut open the flaps carefully. Write the function of each respiratory organ under the flap it goes with. Label and color the diagram.
