Section 3-3 Wave Interactions
2
Reflection Reflection- occurs when a wave bounces back after striking a barrier Echo- reflected sound wave
3
Refraction Refraction- the bending of a wave as it passes at an angle from 1 medium to another
4
Properties of Refraction
Refraction causes different colors of light because light refracts in different amounts Refraction causes objects to look closer than they really are
5
Diffraction Diffraction- the bending of waves around a barrier or through an opening
6
Interference Interference- the overlapping of 2 or more waves
Constructive Interference- occurs when the crest of 1 wave overlaps with the crest of another wave Creates larger amplitude Destructive Interference- occurs when the crest of 1 wave overlaps the trough of another wave Creates smaller amplitudes
7
Standing Waves Standing Wave- wave that forms a stationary patterns in which portions are at the rest position due to total destructive and other portions have a larger amplitude due to constructive interference Resonance occurs when an object vibrating at or near resonant frequency causes a second object to vibrate
