Objective: I will learn the five steps of the writing process and how they are used. Essential Question: What are the five steps of the writing process, and how are they used? Prepare for Cornell Notes

3 Prewriting The first step of the writing process.
The prefix “pre-” means “before.” Therefore, prewriting is the step before formal writing occurs. Prewriting is also known as brainstorming or planning. Prewriting

Create a cluster map with the topic in the center circle. Fill in the surrounding circles with possible ideas that relate to the topic and could be used in the body paragraphs. Think of personal experiences that relate to each of the ideas in the surrounding circles. Choose the THREE ideas from the surrounding circles with the most MEANINGFUL personal experiences, and eliminate the other two circles by crossing them out. 7 Drafting The second step of the writing process.
During the drafting step, the writer expresses his/her ideas using complete sentences. Drafting

8 Use the expository pillar to organize how your thoughts will be shared.

9 Revising A-Add words, sentences, and/or details.
The third step of the writing process. Use the A.R.M.S. Strategy to improve the quality of information being expressed. A-Add words, sentences, and/or details. R-Remove words, sentences, and/or unnecessary details. M-Move sentences and/or change word order. S-Substitute overused words for their synonyms, undescriptive words for more descriptive words. Revising

10 Editing The fourth step of the writing process.
Use the C.U.P.S. Strategy to correct grammatical errors that make your sentences unclear to the reader. C-capitalization-Capitalize the first word in EVERY sentence, and capitalize proper nouns. U-understanding-INDENT at the beginning of EVERY paragraph so that the reader understands when one topic ends and the next topic begins. P-punctuation-Use periods, exclamation points, question marks, commas, and quotation marks correctly. S-Spelling-Use the DICTIONARY to check the spelling of commonly confused and misspelled words. Editing

11 Publishing The fifth and final step of the writing process.
Rewrite your essay using the improvements and corrections made during the revising and editing steps. Lastly, turn in your wonderful work of art to your teacher! \/ Publishing
