1 TC 310 The Computer in Technical Communication
Dr. Jennifer Turns Week 8, Day 2 (11/20)

2 Day 14 By the end of class, students should be able to: What we’ll do…
Place and manipulate graphics in InDesign Make use of Master pages in InDesign Use InDesign to create a simple two-page fact sheet Use a variety of strategies to control the placement of text in InDesign (e.g., creating wacky textbox shapes!) What we’ll do… Part 1: Finish the InDesign Tutorial Part 2: Play with text placement/control Part 3: Create a sample fact sheet

3 Part 1: InDesign Tutorial 1
Getting Started Opening document Viewing document Turning on Guides Threading Text in Frames Placing and flowing text Threading text Adding a pull quote Wrapping text around an object Adding a stroke to the frame Changing the frame inset Changing the margin alignment Working with Styles Applying paragraph styles Formatting text for the character style Creating and applying a character style Placing graphics Working with grouped objects Using the pen tool to reshape an object Targeting layers when placing Rotating the photograph Cropping and moving the photograph Working with Master Pages Editing master pages Applying master pages to document pages Overriding master page items Viewing your document

4 Part 2: Controlling Text
From the help topic, “Working with Text” “All text in Adobe InDesign exists inside containers called frames. Like graphics frames, text frames can be moved, resized, and otherwise manipulated. The tool you use to select a text frame determines the kind of changes you can make. Use the type tool (T) to enter or edit text in a frame. Use the selection tool (solid arrow) for general layout tasks such as positioning and sizing the frame. Use the direct-selection tool (empty arrow) to alter the shape of the frame itself.”

5 Part 2: Methods for placing text
Putting text into cursor Copy File > place, then open the document with the text Pasting text into text frame Simply paste - you will get a default text frame Create a text frame with Type tool – then paste into it Create a text frame with drawing tools– then paste into it Manipulating text frames…

6 Part 2: Design Challenge
Design Challenge: On a single page, create a series of two or more threaded text frames. Try to create the “wackiest” frames you can.

7 Part 3: Creating Sample Fact Sheet
Getting started “Tutorial 2” Available from the class website Save graphics to desktop New Skills Creating new document Specifying number and width of columns Skills from previous tutorial Placing, threading, and formatting text Placing and formatting images

8 Some Useful Points You want to see how layout will appear but don’t have text… Type > Fill placeholder with text What are important issues in print production? Help topics > Index > Color… Your curious – what other programs are similar to InDesign? Help topics > Index > Converting from… End user doesn’t have InDesign?? Use PDF. File > Export > PDF…

9 Looking Ahead Due Dates Next Class Assignment 8 Includes: Celebrate!
Tuesday (11/20) By class Includes: Solution Key Features Design Rationale Learning Reflection Next Class Celebrate! Move on to synthesis and portfolio
