1 Newton’s Laws of Motion

2 Forces What is a force? A push or a pull

3 Forces What are some of the forces that connect to motion?
Contact force- when one object pushes or pulls on another by touching it. Gravity- the force of attraction between two objects. Friction- a force that resists motion between two surfaces that are pressed together.

4 Forces Force is a vector. This mean force has both size and direction.

5 Forces Balanced Forces (does not change motion)
Same size- Opposite direction Unbalanced Forces (can change motion) Same size- Same direction Different size- Same direction Different size- Opposite direction

6 Sir Isaac Newton In the mid-1600s, the English scientist Sir Isaac Newton studied the effects of forces on objects. He formulated three Laws of Motion.

7 Newton’s 1st Law Objects at rest remain at rest, and objects in motion remain in motion with the same velocity, unless acted upon by an unbalanced force.

8 Newton’s 1st Law Inertia-
Inertia is the resistance of an object to a change in the speed or the direction of its motion.

9 Newton’s 2nd Law The acceleration of an object increases with increased force and decreases with increased mass. (Force = mass x acceleration)

10 Newton’s 2nd Law Sample Problem #1
What force is needed to accelerate a 10kg shopping cart 3m/s? Answer Formula: F = ma Substitute: F = (10kg)(3m/s) Solve: F = 30 kg*m/s Answer: F = 30 Newtons or 30N

11 Newton’s 3rd Law Every time one object exerts a force on another object, the second object exerts a force that is equal in size and opposite in direction back on the first object.

12 Which law says that force is equal to mass times acceleration (F=MA)?
