4 Course Purpose To provide information about ways you can help your community prevent, prepare for and respond to emergencies and disasters. You will also learn about volunteer opportunities at your local Red Cross chapter.

5 Course Objectives After completing this course, you will be able to:
Explain how disasters affect people and communities. Describe how the community, including the American Red Cross, works together in disaster preparedness and response. Describe the services the Red Cross provides to people affected by disaster and the principles that guide the Red Cross workers in disaster relief situations.

After completing this course, you will be able to: Identify resources for personal preparedness. Determine how to help your community prepare and respond to disasters. Identify next steps to becoming a disaster volunteer.

7 Town Hall Meeting Working with your table group:
Discuss how the community organization assigned to your group can help out when preparing for and responding to the disaster. Choose three or four ideas and list them on newsprint. Select a spokesperson to present your list.

9 Red Cross History Henry Dunant: founder of the worldwide International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement Driving force for the creation of the Geneva Convention of 1864. The original treaty has expanded to the Geneva Conventions of 1949 and adopted by almost every nation.

Clara Barton: founder of the American Red Cross in 1881 Driving force for bringing the U.S. into compliance with Red Cross principles. In 1900, the American National Red Cross received a Congressional charter making the work of the American Red Cross accountable to, but not funded by Congress.
