1 Weathering, Erosion & Deposition

2 Weathering B R E A It down K
Process by which water, wind and ice break down rocks. There are 2 types of weathering: Mechanical and Chemical

3 Mechanical Weathering
Process by which rocks are broken down into smaller pieces by physical forces. Root Pry Abrasion (grinding) Ice wedging Burrowing of animals

4 Root Pry

5 Abrasion -rubbing of sand and gravel

6 Ice Wedging - freezing and expanding of water causing cracking and breaking
Why would it be beneficial to seal concrete?

7 Burring of Animals

8 Chemical Weathering the process that breaks down rock through chemical changes. Water – dissolves rock over time Oxygen – combines with iron to form rust (oxidation) Carbon dioxide – dissolves in water to form carbonic acid

9 Water breaking down rock

10 Oxygen combining with iron to form rust – “oxidation”

11 Carbon dioxide dissolves in water to form carbonic acid that weakens limestone and marble

12 This can cause sink holes and caves

13 All rocks are effected by weathering!
Sedimentary Metamorphic Igneous

14 Erosion C A R R I E S It away
Movement of weathered rock (sediment) by wind, water, ice or gravity

20 Deposition D O R It here P
Process by which wind, water and gravity leave weathered rock (sediment) in a new location
