3 Activation Activity Watch this video and answer the following questions How do you think religions spread? Why do you think it is important to realize how religions spread?

4 Standard and Element SS6G10 The student will describe the cultural characteristics of Europe. b. Describe the major religions in Europe; include Judaism, Christianity, and Islam.

5 Tree Map Create a tree map that shows the three main religions of Europe. Be sure to include details in the tree map.

7 Judaism Started around 2000 BC
Jews believe that God gave Moses the Ten Commandments. Later, Jews believe God revealed the Torah. Torah- Jewish holy book. Also known as the first five books of the old testament. Oral and written law of the Jews Jewish Golden Rule: “What is hateful to you, do not do to your neighbor”

8 Christianity Started around 30 AD
Christianity has its roots in Judaism Christians believe in Jesus was a man but also God. Jews believe that a messiah, or savior, will come to earth to save them. “Messiah” is another word for savior Christians believe Jesus was the Messiah Jesus believed in one God and accepted the Ten Commandments

9 Christianity continued
Jesus’ disciples, or followers, wrote the gospels which are part of the New Testament “Disciples” is another word for followers New Testament- part of the Christian holy book called the Bible. Christians are grouped by denomination. There are many different denominations The main ones found in Europe are Catholicism, Orthodoxy, and Protestantism. They all follow the life and teachings of Jesus

10 Islam Started around 610 AD
Muhammad brought Arabs together to follow the religion of Islam. Followers of Islam are called Muslims. Muslims believe the Qur’an contains the word of Allah

11 Islam States how people should live their lives
Qur’an- Muslim holy book States how people should live their lives All Muslims learn the five pillars of Islam Faith, Prayer, Charity, Fasting, and Pilgrimage (hajj) Hajj- journey a Muslim makes to Mecca the holist city at least once in a lifetime
