At one time controlled land from Sea of Japan to Central Europe Nomadic tribes unified under Genghis Khan in 1206.

Known for having great horsemanship, especially using lances and bows and arrows Used maneuvers such “fake retreat”, and trebuchets for siege warfare

6 Bubonic Plague Yersinia Pestis- origin unknown but carried by rats (fleas). Mongol armies and traders brought disease into Europe where it spread often via merchant ships Responsible for death of perhaps 33% of the population in China, and up to 60% of the population in Europe. Devastating impact on society- physicians treated with bloodletting, Jewish populations were blamed for poisoning wells, preoccupation with death “Danse Macabre” (Dance of Death)

7 The Black Death People questioned roles of society, God’s anger
Impact- decline of trade, high death rate leads to increase in wages Less population caused the decline of serfdom ( where peasants work a Lord’s land and the Lord keeps the profit)
