1 Solutions, Suspensions, and Colloids
Physical Science 2015 Ms. Oster

2 Let’s Review

3 Homogenous Mixtures CANNOT tell the difference between different types of particles. The particles are evenly distributed throughout.

4 Homogeneous Mixtures - Solutions
Forms when one substance dissolves in another Two parts: Solute and solvent Solute: the thing being dissolved Solvent: the thing doing the dissolving EXAMPLES: In saltwater, ___________ is the solute, and ___________ is the solvent. WATER is called the universal solvent!!! Yay water! Alloys are solutions of 2 or more metals (Copper & iron make brass)

5 Homogeneous mixtures - Colloids
Particles are Large enough that you can see them, BUT they don’t settle out. EXAMPLES: milk, soil, & foam

6 Heterogeneous mixtures
Can tell the difference between the different types of particles. The particles are Not evenly distributed throughout.

7 Heterogeneous mixtures - suspensions
Solute particles are suspended in solvent. Solute particles are large and due to gravity will settle out. The solute and solvent to not evenly mix. You must shake or agitate the contents in some way. EXAMPLES: salad dressing (oil and water), Dust in air, & sand in water.

8 Examples
