2 Monroe Doctrine Dec. 2, 1823 President James Monroe and Vice-President John Adams No European nation could start a new colony anywhere in the Americas U.S. and Europe would stay out of each other’s territory Armies would stay out of each other’s territory

3 Colonialism Years when Europeans came to America to make a new life British colonies start of what is now the United States Spanish in Mexico and in Central and South America Portuguese in Brazil French settlements in Canada Religious freedom, economic growth

1700’s and beyond Change in manufacturing and industry Riverboats and steamboats allowed the transportation of goods Cotton gin increased the output of cotton and the need for more slaves

5 American Revolution King George III failed to respond to the complaints of American colonists George Washington took control of the Continental Army in 1775 1776 Declaration of Independence British surrendered in 1781 and sign treaty of peace in 1783

6 Slave Trade Between these years about 3.5 million Africans were taken by force to America (mostly in the South) 1808 Congress passed a law against bringing any more slaves into the country Many slaves were still brought in illegally 1831 Nat Turner led a failed slave revolt in Virginia resulting in harsher laws against blacks

7 Louisiana Purchase 1803 United States purchase the territory from France for $15 million (three cents per acre) 828,000 square miles Doubled the size of the United States

8 Civil War 1861-1865 Most terrible war in U.S. history
620,000 Americans died Battle over slavery and the balance between state and federal powers 1863- President Lincoln signs Emancipation Proclamation General Robert E. Lee surrendered on April 9, 1865 Five days later President Lincoln was killed by John Wilkes Booth
