1 Hedging Hedging consists in the ability to avoid overgeneralizing and to sound reliable and trustworthy to your reader.

2 Avoid emotionalism In addition to a formal voice, you should also maintain an objective tone, especially when you are writing about hot topics you feel strongly about - religion, for example, or cultural values. Even when you strongly disagree with an idea, avoid getting too ‘emotional’ in your expression.

3 Avoid sexist language In English it is considered sexist to use masculine pronouns or words if it is not needed. Instead of writing or saying “Every student has to pass his exams”, it is advisable to write: “All students have to pass their exams” or “Every student has to pass their exams”.

4 Examples: Everyone has their own set of prejudices. Each family member takes their turn at cooking. See also “spokesperson” instead of “spokesman”, “chair” instead of “chairman” etc.

5 Nationality-Related Words
Words referring to nationality and languages begin with a capital letter in English. Ex. Anna is a Somali woman. John is Welsh. The European treaties.

6 AmE / BrE– be consistent!
program vs programme center vs centre color vs colour capitalize vs capitalise 6
