Windows 10 is now the recommended OS for AARP Foundation Tax-Aide computers.
Reimaging your Tax-Aide computers is the recommended method to keep computers up-to-date.
If you don’t reimage this year, in addition to the normal Windows and other security sensitive program updating, all Microsoft Office Viewers must be removed from Tax-Aide computers. Microsoft has discontinued their support, so they are no longer secure

Windows Updating
It is important that our computers used for Tax Return preparation be kept current with Windows Updates both before and during the Tax Season.
Some of these updates are very large files and can be disruptive if they try to install when the computer is preparing tax returns.
Typically Microsoft batches their updates on “Patch Tuesday,” the 2nd and sometimes 4th Tuesday of the month.
Here is what is recommended to prevent Windows Update from running when doing Tax Returns during the Tax Season.

7. Limiting Updating – Win 10
With Windows 10, Automatic Updating can not be turned off, but you can set Active Hours that will prevent their installation when doing tax returns.
From Start, select Settings, then Update & Security, >Windows Update, finally Change Active Hours. Then type in the hours you want to block the Windows Update.
Then at the end of the shift or possibly when the volunteer gets home, he/she can go into Windows Update, choose Install Now to install the updates.
If Volunteers don’t regularly install postponed updates Windows will go ahead to install them and ignore the Active Hours restrictions.

8. Limiting Updating – Win 7
With Windows 7, you can choose when you want to install Windows Update.
From Start open the Control Panel, from System and Security select Windows Update, then Change Settings on the left side of the screen.
Then under Important Updates, choose Download updates but let me choose whether to install them.
Then at the end of the shift or possibly when the volunteer gets home, he/she can go into Windows Update, choose Install Now and install the updates.
Volunteers need to regularly check to see if there are pending Updates.

Chromebook Computers
Chromebooks are inexpensive, light weight computers that use the Google Chrome Operating System. They are somewhat of a cross between a traditional laptop and a tablet.

Routers
Malware called VPNFilter that attacks routers has recently been identified. It can steal files and other information, and examine network traffic flowing through a Router.
Simply rebooting the Router will remove some of this malware. These links provide more information.

Many older Routers that do not have updated firmware available are at risk.
We are recommending that Routers that have firmware more than one year old no longer be used at our sites. More on this topic on the Security Presentation.

Recently it has been determined that there can be a security issue with Wireless Printers from KRAAK.
Installing the latest Printer firmware updates will protect those printers. 
As of July 2018, firmware updates are available for most wireless printers in our inventory except for some older Brothers and Samsung models.
