1 Montague The Negligent Parent

2 The Negligent Parent Is…
Often ignorant of his/her child’s life Depends on others to bring him/her information Reasonably distant from his/her child At times childish when dealing with problems Expects his/her child to solve problems alone Hands his/her child his/her problems (reverse parenting situation)

3 There are plenty of examples of this…

4 Monologue of Choice: Why this monologue?
O, where is Romeo? saw you him to-day? Right glad I am he was not at this fray. Many a morning hath he there been seen, With tears augmenting the fresh morning dew. Adding to clouds more clouds with his deep sighs; But all so soon as the all-cheering sun Should in the furthest east begin to draw The shady curtains from Aurora's bed, Away from the light steals home my heavy son, And private in his chamber pens himself, Shuts up his windows, locks far daylight out And makes himself an artificial night: Black and portentous must this humour prove, Unless good counsel may the cause remove. Why this monologue? Shows how he puts responsibility on others Shows how he knowingly avoids helping his son Shows how he is almost mocking of Romeo, and feigns powerlessness even though Romeo is right in front of him

5 The Negligent Parent O, where is Romeo? saw you him to-day? Right glad I am he was not at this fray. Many a morning hath he there been seen, With tears augmenting the fresh morning dew. Adding to clouds more clouds with his deep sighs; But all so soon as the all-cheering sun Should in the furthest east begin to draw The shady curtains from Aurora's bed, Away from the light steals home my heavy son, And private in his chamber pens himself, Shuts up his windows, locks far daylight out And makes himself an artificial night: Black and portentous must this humour prove, Unless good counsel may the cause remove. We can see here, Montague Says his son has “been seen” often crying on the outskirts of town—does not report as though he regularly looks for him himself Observes that he locks himself in his bedroom and refuses to come out Notes that Romeo’s humour, or attitude, will only bring about a horrible end (black and portentous) unless he gets some good advice, but then depends on Benvolio to give it

6 Tragic-Comedy? It is a funny at times because it exaggerates how sad Romeo is, and Montague says this half-mocking It also leans towards tragedy because, although Montague recognizes that Romeo’s humour is “black and portentous”, he still does not get directly involved
