Sir William Osler ( )• best-known physician in the English-speaking world at the turn of the century, called the "most influential physician in history"• born on July 12,1849 at Bond Head, Canada West (now Ontario)• died on Dec 29, 1919, Oxford, England• raised in Dundas, Canada West• trained in medicine at the Univeristy of Toronto and McGill • obtained an MD at McGill in1872• postgraduate training in England and Europe began teaching medicine and pathology at McGill • in 1889 he became the first professor of medicine at Johns Hopkins University• expert in diagnosis of diseases of the heart, lungs and blood• wrote the textbook The Principles and Practice of Medicine in 1892 (and frequently revised); it was considered authoritative for more than 30 years• combined physiological and psychological treatment of patients• emphasized the importance of the patients state of mind in acheiving a cure• called the father of psychosomatic medicine• helped create the system of postgraduate training for physicians that is followed to this day• emphasized the need for medical students to spend time with patients• published extensively and built international reputation as an astute and humane clinician• made contributions to knowledge in a wide spectrum of clinical fields• stimulated students who later became leaders of the medical profession• his description of the inadequacy of treatment methods for most disorders was a major factor leading to the creation of the Rockefeller Institute for Medical Research in New York• moved to England in 1905 to take up the Regius Chair of Medicine, which he held until his death• was made a baronet in 1911

3. BIMM 118 - Exams MIDTERM EXAM (Thu, Feb 7th - In class):
The midterm exam will count for 30% of the final grade. Students can opt out of taking the midterm exam by notifying the instructor BY (use of UCSD account MANDATORY) no later than TWO days prior to the exam, in which case the final exam will account for 100% of the final grade.
No make-up exams!
FINAL EXAM (Thu, Mar 21th 8: :00 am, Location TBA):
The comprehensive final exam will account for 70% of the final grade.
Exams will be graded on a curve, with the top 5 scores establishing the 100% mark:
(88-100% = A; 76-87% = B; 64-75% = C; 52-63% = D; <52% = F).
Note: Wrong answers on multiple choice questions on the exams will result in the deduction of the points !!!!!!

4. BIMM Exams
REGRADES:
Any requests for regrades must be submitted in writing (reason for regrade request attached to complete exam) within 2 days after the exams have been returned.

5. BIMM 118 - Discussion Sections
The discussion sections will not introduce any new material.
Attendance is voluntary (nevertheless recommended) and provides a venue to review the course material with the help of the TAs (particularly underlying physiology and drug side effects!).
Any breach of academic honesty as outlined in the UCSD Policies on Integrity of Scholarship may be considered grounds for failure of the course.

7. BIMM 118 - Text Books Text Books:
Unfortunately, there is no perfect textbook for BIMM118, (most pharmacology texts are aimed at students in medical schools, schools of pharmacy etc., and are consequently far beyond the scope of BIMM118)
Therefore, no textbook is required (all lecture notes are posted on the website and are available for download).
A list of pharmacology books (with comments) is posted on the course website -> Textbooks
Knowledge and understanding of the content posted on the course website is sufficient for an A+ grade!
