Gravimetric Analysis Determining information about a species by performing a reaction and measuring how much product was formed. Involves the creation of a solid that can be easily collected and measured.

Sample Problems 1. An impure sample of NaCl, which weighed 0.50 g, was treated with excess AgNO3 (aq). The solid precipitate that formed was filtered, dried, and found to have a mass of 0.90 g. What percent of the original sample is NaCl?

2. Copper has compounds with copper (I) ion or copper (II) ion
2. Copper has compounds with copper (I) ion or copper (II) ion. A compound of copper and chlorine was treated with a solution of silver nitrate, AgNO3, to convert the chloride ion in the compound to a precipitate of AgCl. A mg sample of the copper compound gave mg AgCl. a. Calculate the percentage of chlorine in the copper compound. b. Decide whether the compound is CuCl or CuCl2.

3. An 8.32 gram sample of a compound that contains only C, H, and N is completely burned in oxygen gas. In the reaction, all of the carbon from the original sample reacts to form carbon dioxide. Determine the mass of carbon in the compound if 22.5 grams of CO2 is produced in the combustion. Determine the mass of hydrogen in the compound if analysis of the original sample shows it to be 8.65% hydrogen, by mass.

3. An 8.32 gram sample of a compound that contains only C, H, and N is completely burned in oxygen gas. c) What is the mass of nitrogen in the original sample? d) Determine the empirical formula for the compound. e) The compound is found to have a molar mass of g/mol. Determine the molecular formula for the compound.
