1 IV.Ancient Egyptian Culture
A.Introduction 1.Egyptians recorded stories in their tombs. 2.It is interesting to study the everyday life of the Egyptians. B.The Lives of the Egyptians 1.Much of what we know comes from paintings and tombs. 2.Like other cultures, the Egyptians had social classes. 3.Egyptian society itself resembled a pyramid. 4.Although Egypt had slaves, the slave population was never really large. 5.Most peasants worked on land of wealthy land owners. 6.Harvest time was the busiest season for Egypt’s peasants. 7.Women held places of importance in Egyptian society. 8.Some women acted as regents until the pharaoh was old enough.

2 C.Writing in Ancient Egypt
1.Records and writings allow us to learn about the Egyptians. 2.Hieroglyphs were the written language of Egypt. 3.Hieroglyphs developed to keep track of the wealth. 4.Egyptians wrote on clay, carved on stone, and wrote on papyrus. 5.The Rosetta Stone made it possible to decipher hieroglyphs. 6.Jean Francois Champollion deciphered the hieroglyphs in 1822. D.Science and Medicine 1.Egypt was known as a land of great learning. 2.The Egyptians developed the 365 day calendar. 3.They used mathematics. They could add, subtract, etc. 4.Doctors could set broken bones and treat minor injuries. 5.They used natural remedies to help ease everyday illnesses.
