1 What is the Matter?

2 Everything that has mass and volume is called matter.
What is Matter? Everything that has mass and volume is called matter. Basic definition of matter.

3 States of Matter Solids Liquids Gases Plasma Others

4 On earth we live upon an island of "ordinary" matter
On earth we live upon an island of "ordinary" matter. The different states of matter generally found on earth are solid, liquid, and gas. We have learned to work, play, and rest using these familiar states of matter. Sir William Crookes, an English physicist, identified a fourth state of matter, now called plasma, in 1879. Plasma

5 Plasma Plasma is by far the most common form of matter.
Plasma exists in the stars and in the space in between them This means that plasma makes up over 99% of the visible universe and perhaps most of that which is not visible.

6 Kinetic Theory of Motion
All matter is composed of small particles (atoms and molecules). They are in constant, random motion. They constantly collide with each other and with the walls of their container.

7 Properties of Each State of Matter
Particle Properties Phase Proximity Energy Motion Volume Shape Solid close little vibrational definite definite Liquid close moderate rotational definite indefinite Gas far apart a lot translational indefinite indefinite

8 Properties of Each State of Matter

9 Solids Have a definite shape volume Molecules are held
close together and there is very little movement between them.

10 Liquids Have an indefinite shape Have a definite volume
Atoms and molecules have more space between them than a solid does, but less than a gas (ie. It is more “fluid”)

11 Gases Have an indefinite shape volume Molecules are moving in random
patterns with varying amounts of distance between the particles.
