1 Cancelling Penalties

2 Coincidental Penalties

3 Coincidental Penalties
Outcome To correctly apply the rules in basic coincidental penalty situations.

4 A coincidental penalty situation occurs when a
MINOR / BENCH MINOR or a MAJOR / MATCH penalty is assessed to BOTH TEAMS at the SAME STOPPAGE of play.

5 Coincidental Penalty Situations
13:00 A4 = Minor (2) B7 = Minor (2) 12:00 A6 = Minor (2) B9 = Bench Minor (2) 11:00 A8 = Major (5) B3 = Major (5) 10:00 A2 = Match (5) B5 = Major (5)

6 Important Note #1 Rule 4.2(c)
When a player is assessed both a Minor penalty and a Major penalty at the same time, the Major is served first. Example: 12:00 A4:

7 Important Note #2 Rule 4.12(e)
When a Minor penalty and a Major penalty are assessed at the same time against two different players of the same team, the Referee is to report the Minor as being the first penalty assessed. 12: A4: 2 12: A6: 5

8 Procedure for Solving Coincident Penalty Situations

9 MOTO M - Cancel as Many penalties of the same value from each team as possible and… O - Cancel as many penalties as possible in a way to make teams only One player short, then T - Cancel as many of the remaining penalties as possible in a way to avoid Taking an extra player off the ice, then O - Cancel as many of the remaining penalties as possible using the Order of occurrence (i.e., the order that the penalties were reported by the Referee)

10 Assume all penalties occur at the same stoppage. A. A4 2 B7 2
When Doing this exercise we can be doing the numerical strength on the ice.

11 Assume all penalties occur at the same stoppage. A. A4 2 B7 2 MOTO
Cancel as MANY penalties of the same value from each team as possible… …that’s 1 “deuce” from each team…

12 Assume all penalties occur at the same stoppage. A. A4 2 B7 2
Cancel 1 deuce on each side (you’re done!)...

13 Assume all penalties occur at the same stoppage.
A. A B7 2 No time penalties result Both teams play at full strength A4 and B7 sit in penalty box until first stoppage of play after their 2 minute “sentence” (non-time penalty) is over

14 Assume all penalties occur at the same stoppage. B. A4 2 + 2 B7 2 A6 2

15 Assume all penalties occur at the same stoppage. B. A4 2 + 2 B7 2 A6 2
MOTO Cancel as MANY penalties of the same value from each team as possible… …that’s 1 “deuce” from each team…

16 Assume all penalties occur at the same stoppage. B. A4 2 + 2 B7 2 A6 2
Cancel Team B’s deuce… Go to next step in MOTO to cancel Team A’s deuce…

17 Assume all penalties occur at the same stoppage.
B. A B7 2 A6 2 MOTO Test for ways to cancel 1 deuce on Team A to make them only ONE SHORT… Only one option exists…

18 Assume all penalties occur at the same stoppage. B. A4 2 + 2 B7 2 A6 2
Cancel A6’s deuce to make Team A only ONE SHORT…

19 Assume all penalties occur at the same stoppage.
B. A B7 2 A6 2 A4’s deuces are time penalties - Served by A4 Team A plays 1 short for 4 minutes A6 & B7 sit for 2+ minutes
