Your Task Collect a stack of strips of paper, 1 highlighter, a whiteboard, marker, and eraser for each pair Collect a paper for each person Return to your seats

Measure and Try From your stack, choose any 3 strips of paper. Record the lengths of the papers in the table (it doesn’t matter which is a, b or c). Determine if the strips can form a triangle. Do this 10 times. Highlight the rows in the table when the lengths did NOT form a triangle.

Making Your Inference Consider the lengths of sides that did and did not form triangles. What did you notice about the lengths of the pieces that did NOT form triangles, as they relate to one another? Write your idea on the whiteboard.

Making Your Inference On your whiteboard, write a general rule for determining whether 3 line segments can form a triangle. Use “a”, “b” and “c” in your rule.

Take 2! Select 2 strips of paper, not the same size. Return all the rest to the front. Measure the two pieces. Determine what length you need a third piece to be in order to form a triangle. Write your need (and evidence!) on the white board, and show me. I’ll give you the paper, and we’ll see if you’re correct!

Exit Slip Please put your name on the exit slip, complete it individually, and hand it to me as you leave.
