1 WAVES-- A disturbance that transfers energy through matter or space
A wave requires a medium—material that is disturbed by the wave Air Water Solid Objects The wave moves the medium’s particles from their resting position They do not travel with the wave— just up/down or back/forth Some kinds of waves do not require a medium Electromagnetic Waves Light waves/Radio waves

2 Shorter wavelength = more energy
Crest High point Amplitude Resting position Trough Low point Wavelength Wavelength-- Distance from any point on a wave to the identical point on the next wave Amplitude—distance from the midpoint (resting position) of the wave to its top (crest) or its bottom ( trough) Shorter wavelength = more energy

3 The number of waves that pass a given point in one second
Frequency-- The number of waves that pass a given point in one second Frequency and wavelength are inversely related??? When frequency increases—wavelength decreases or vice versa!! 2 kinds of waves Transverse Waves-- Particles of the medium move perpendicular to the path of the wave Longitudinal Waves-- Particles of the medium vibrate parallel to the path of the wave

4 Let’s Practice Compression-- Rarefaction--
Part of the wave where particles are pushed closed together Part of the wave where particles are spread apart Let’s Practice Number your paper 1 - 4 1. Which of the following is NOT a medium? Space B. Air C. Water D. Wood

5 2. A wave’s amplitude is A. The distance from the resting point to a crest or trough. B. The distance between the crest of one wave and the crest of the next wave. C. The distance the wave travels in one second. D. The number of waves that pass a given point in one second. 3. Picture a tub filled with water and a toy boat floating on the water. You plunge your fist in the water, next to the toy boat. What will happen to the boat? It will travel to the other end of the tub. It will stay completely still. It will travel closer to your fist. It will bob up and down. 4. Which part of a transverse wave is similar to a compression in a longitudinal wave? A. Trough B. Midpoint C. Crest D. Particle
