1 Voting and Elections

2 Introduction Voting in an election has been called the single most important act of political participation in a democracy. Canadian democracy is a representative democracy (we elect people who represent us). Federal & provincial elections have to be held every 5 years and municipal elections are held every 3 years The Prime Minister or Premier has the authority to call an election and chooses the best time within the 5 year period to call an election.

3 Elections in Canada One must be 18 to vote in Canada
Candidates (usually chosen from a political party) campaign to be elected Any citizen can run for public office provided: They are 18 They have the support (signatures) of 100 people They pay $1000 The candidate with the most votes becomes the Member of Parliament (MP) or Member of Provincial Parliament (MPP)
