1 Danny Reible Fate and transport of contaminants in the environment
9.102F ECJ Fate and transport of contaminants in the environment Understanding and modeling of processes leading to exposure and risk In-situ approaches to intervention in these processes to manage that risk Media of interest – contaminated sediment Passive sampling of interstitial water concentrations Sediment capping/amended capping/permeable sorptive barriers

2 Ongoing Activities Lab – 7.102 ECJ
PhD Tony Smith – Evaluation of biodegradation in sediments and beneath a sediment cap (expected to finish 5/11) Fei Yan – Redox control of sediment fate processes (expected to finish 12/11) Mustafa Erten – Geotechnical assessment of NAPL contaminated sediments (expected to finish 12/11) Paul Bireta – Mercury fate and transport in sediments (expected to finish 5/14) Courtney Thomas – Passive sampling of organic contaminants (expected to finish 5/14) Wardah Azhar – Capping contaminated sediments (expected to finish 5/14) MS Patrick Dunlap – Sediment capping amendments (expected to finish 5/11) Research Associate/Visiting Professors XiaoXia Lu – Laboratory Director – Chemical Engineer/Benthic Biology David Lampert – Postdoctoral Associate (Passive sampling and sediment transport modeling) Cesar Gomez-Hermosillo – Visiting professor Univ of Guadalajara

3 Assessing and Managing Sediments
Field deployable SPME Organoclays Passive Sampling So, if we really want to use porewater to characterize availability, how do we measure it? It’s difficult due to typically low concentrations and limited sample volumes, but with a passive sampling technique, SPME, can concentrate the contaminant into a solid phase which increases detection limits dramatically Have field-deployable model that can be used to measure concentrations in sediment, and even at discrete depths in sediment Steady state Modeled permeable sorptive barrier Passive Sampling for Organics and Metals
