1 Group Stages 1. Form Storm Norm 4. Perform
Come together for some common purpose/goal. Storm Conflict as team develops/resistance to leadership. Norm Communication with shared vision/efforts. 4. Perform Progress and group problem-solving.

2 Group Communication GROUP STAGE 1:
FORMING  In this stage, most team members are positive and polite. Some are anxious, as they haven't fully understood what work the team will do. Others are simply excited about the task ahead.

3 Group Communication GROUP STAGE 2: The Nature of Group Conflict
STORMING The Nature of Group Conflict Natural occurrence Accept it as a part of working in groups  Handling Difficult People and Reasons that people might exhibit behavior that seems difficult: Need for attention or validation (recognize and acknowledge) Lack of Communication Competence Differences of Perceptions Language Problems A Genuine Problem

4 Group Communication GROUP STAGE 3: NORMING What is Norming?
Norming is the stage of group communication when group members are comfortable with each other (FORM) have worked through problems (STORM) and are able to communicate effectively Constructive communication Cohesion Renewed vision Shared efforts

5 Group Communication GROUP STAGE 4: PERFORMING What is Performing?
It’s exactly what it sounds like. The group has navigated the first three stages and is ready to complete the task at hand. Depending on the composition of the group and the circumstances surrounding the goal, groups can move in and out of stages FORM, STORM, NORM, and PERFORM multiple times; it is a constantly evolving process.

6 Activity Group Members Puzzle: Who Am I??
Work with your group to determine which group member matches each definition. Use consensus (all must agree)

7 Group Members Nitpicker:
Want everything spelled out and will quibble until they get what they want! Be sure these members get opportunities to speak, but insist they keep their comments brief.

8 Group Members Eager Beavers:
Want to offer a solution whether they have given it any thought or not. Try to funnel their enthusiasm so that they become valuable group members.

9 Group Members Fence Sitters:
Don’t dare take a position until they’re sure “key people” will agree. Let them know their opinions will really matter.

10 Wisecrackers: The group clowns. Pick up the pace of the discussion.

11 Group Members Superior Beings:
Look down their noses at the whole business. Make them feel needed.

12 Group Members Dominators: Don’t know when to quit talking.
Make such persons recorders or evaluators.
