1 What happened in the North of England?
What happened in the north of England? B: William gave northern land to his Normans to thanks them for their loyalty in the conquest! (how do you think the English reacted?) E: In 1069 English rebels attacked the City of Durham and killed the Norman Earl, Robert D: The rebels killed 1000 Normans (revenge for taking their land and country) A: The rebellion spread to the city of York C: The Vikings sailed to join the rebels! (Why do you think they did this?) F: The Vikings and Saxon rebels attacked York! What did William do? What do these quotes tell us he did/how he felt? Source B: ‘the king stopped at nothing to hunt his enemies’ ‘he punished the innocent along with the guilty’ ‘He ordered crops to be burnt to ashes’ Source C: ‘I ordered large herds of cattle to be slaughtered’ ‘I became the murderer of thousands, old and young’. Do YOU agree with what William did? Explain your answer! Can you consider the other point of view?

2 Peace man! How did William take control peacefully?
L/O: To explain the THIRD way William used to take control of England and compare it to the other methods. Starter: What are your rights in school and life? – think of FIVE things you have a right to have and write them down! b) For each of these rights there are responsibilities – write down what you must do to deserve each of your rights.

3 Method 1: The feudal system
RIGHTS RESPONSIBILITES Remember he could not just jump on a train to check how the northerners were behaving! It would take him days to ride there! So William had a cunning plan for taking control of all the land in England! He would give out RIGHTS and expect the people the RESPONSIBLE in return! What he did: He said all the land in England belonged to him! He shared the land out amongst his Barons (not to own to use to make money) The Barons then had to promise to give him soldiers! The Barons allowed their knights to control some of the land The knights had to promise to fight for the Baron (and the King) when asked The peasants were allowed to farm the knights land and eat the food The peasants had to supply food to the Knights AND ALL HAD TO BE LOYAL!! OR GET THEIR HEADS CHOPPED OFF!

4 Task 1: You will now be given a card with a character on
You will be going outside (if not raining) and setting yourselves up in the Feudal system! You will then need to take it in turns to read out your cards in groups to the people above you! Key word: Pay homage: Promising to be loyal at all times!

5 Task 2: In your books: Draw and illustrate your own version of the Feudal system Who was the most powerful in this system and why? How much power did the Baron’s have? Explain Explain how William used rights and responsibilities to gain control. Now compare this method with castles and terror. Which one do you think would have the biggest impact and why?

6 Method 2: The Domesday Book
In order to make the Feudal system work, William needed to know how much land, animals, people, resources etc. he had! In 1085 he sent teams of Normans around the countryside to ask people how much they owned and what it was worth! They wrote everything down in a big book called the Domesday Book! Watch the following Horrible Histories on the Domesday Book and then complete your worksheet on the Domesday Book! You will finish this (or start!) for Homework! Enjoy!
