1 UNIT 2 Changes in State

2 1.) Particle Arrangement
The state (phase) of matter that we recognize is determined by 2 things. 1.) Particle Arrangement 2.) Temperature

3 By changing the temperature (energy) acting on a substance you can change the state (phase) of matter it is in.

4 State (Phase) Changes Melting Freezing Evaporation Condensation Sublimation

5 ( candy bar in your pocket )
Melting When a solid changes into a liquid. * must increase the energy acting upon it ( candy bar in your pocket )

6

7 Freezing When a liquid changes into a solid.
* must decrease the energy acting upon it ( water turning to ice )

8

9 Evaporation When a liquid changes to a gas.
* must increase the energy acting upon it ( hand sanitizer )

10

11 ( sweat on a drinking glass )
Condensation When a gas changes to a liquid. * must decrease the energy acting upon it ( sweat on a drinking glass )

12

13 ( dry ice, or ice in a freezer)
Sublimation When a solid changes into a gas without a liquid state. *can occur by increasing or decreasing the energy ( dry ice, or ice in a freezer)

17 Heat of Fusion The amount of energy needed to turn a solid into a liquid. * changes with the material in the solid * how they extract metals out of rock

18 Heat of Vaporization The amount of energy needed to change a liquid into a gas. * changes with the material in the liquid * how they increase the concentration of a liquid in cooking

19

20 As faster moving particle escape, the energy of the remaining particles become less.
* the temperature drops * cooling effect as water evaporates off your skin

21 Boiling When evaporation occurs throughout a liquid.
* evaporation starts next to the heat source

22 The End
