4. BACKGROUND WHY DEWORMING?
Low cost intervention, learners to perform best of abilities
Improved health status, increased productivity, educational performance, life expectancy, savings and investments
decreased debts and expenditure on health care
Studies in the US: worm infections lower’s literacy levels by 13% and lower’s earnings later in life by 43%
Research in Western Kenya: school based mass deworming decrease absenteeism by 25%

5. WHO STAKEHOLDERS MEETING
Effective coordination and collaboration between DBE, DOH
The target should not be learners in quintile 1 to 3 schools but ALL children of the age 5 to 14 years to eliminate helminth infections
Improved reporting by DOH and DBE

6. 2018: PROCESS
Request for tablets for 2018 approved 10,597,597 tablets (70,678 bottles)
Based on Stats SA Population for 5-14 year olds
Consent forms distributed by SASAMS
DBE provinces to follow up re: effectiveness
Health services only to those with signed consent
Orientation, those schools not previously dewormed (utilise technology)

9. MODEL OF IMPLEMENTATION
National Deworming Weeks: 7-18 May 2018
Responsible: DBE, DOH, DSD
All surrounding schools (Q1-5, private schools) mapped to health clinic
ISASA notified all independent schools of deworming on weekly bulletin, further information on ISASA website
Provincial plans to be shared for participation
A schedule of participation develop indicating times and dates
Schools on spreadsheet that receive bottles / return bottles
Non-participating schools easily spotted, followed up

10. WAY FORWARD Provinces develop own plans Submission date of reports:
Reach and number of unused tablets: 15 July 2018
Timely submission- timely approval of 2019 tablets
Improved communication and coordination
Provinces: address Teacher Unions in affected areas
Distribution of tablets by educators: process can be facilitated at provincial level through Provincial Pharmacists (as was done by NC)

11. WAY FORWARD Advocacy ongoing from January 2018
0.5% of the NSNP Conditional Grant earmarked for nutrition education and deworming
Can be utilised for the distribution of tablets, advocacy etc.
