2 Adverbs: An adverb is a word that modifies a verb, an adjective, or another adverb. Adverbs Modifying Verbs: An adverb modifying a verb answers the questions where? when? In what way? Or to what extent? Adverbs can also be placed in many different positions. They can come before a verb or verb phrase or even between the words in the verb phrase. Where? Fell below went there move aside climbs down When? Arrived today should have spoken before left early begins then In What Way? Happily ran danced awkwardly will end abruptly had been sung loudly To What Extent? Partly understands have not completed wash completely hardly would have known Identifying adverbs that modify verbs

3 Adverbs Modifying Adjectives and Adverbs
An adverb modifying an adjective answers only one question: to what extent? When an adverb modifies an adjective, it usually comes directly before the adjective, as shown in the examples in the following chart. Adverbs Modifying Adjectives Moved very quickly not completely wrong Climbed almost over only just recognizable Recognizing adverbs that modify adjectives and adverbs + revising to eliminate unnecessary adverbs

4 Adjective or Adverb? An adverb modifies a verb, an adjective or another adverb. An adjective modifies a noun or a pronoun Adverb: I awoke early. Adjective: I had an early class. The word early takes the same form whether used as an adjective or an adverb. Adjectives Adverbs with –ly endings Gentle hands Bright paint Handle gently Painted brightly Nouns Adjectives with –ly endings A head of curls A close friend Curly hair Friendly neighbors
